Tesla reports third-quarter 2026 results after the US market close on Wednesday 21 October. The company's 8-K of 2 October says the Q3 update will be posted on its investor relations site, with a live question-and-answer webcast at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time. This preview is written before the print: nothing below is a reported Q3 profit number.

Tesla shares closed on Tuesday 20 October at $373.71, up 1.5% on the day. That is 16.9% below the 31 December 2025 close of $449.72 and 23.7% below the record close of $489.88 set on 16 December 2025. The 2026 low close was $298.32 on 29 July, the week after the Q2 report, so the stock has recovered 25.3% from that trough.

What the consensus expects

Estimates differ by source and by accounting basis, so it is worth naming each one.

  • Adjusted EPS: 45 cents, per MarketBeat's consensus, against 50 cents in Q3 2025.
  • GAAP EPS: 22 cents on Nasdaq's Zacks-sourced table (10 estimates, ranging from 9 to 52 cents); Hudson Labs shows 26 cents. A year ago GAAP EPS was 39 cents.
  • Revenue: $27.57 billion in the Hudson Labs consensus, slightly below the $28.10 billion of Q3 2025.
  • Gross margin: 17.7% in the Hudson Labs consensus, against 16.8% in Q2 and 18.0% a year ago.

The gap between adjusted and GAAP is wide this quarter for two reasons: stock-based compensation, which reached $1.15 billion in Q2, and the mark-to-market on Tesla's SpaceX stake, discussed below.

The last report sets the tone. In July Tesla posted adjusted EPS of 33 cents against a 50-cent MarketBeat consensus, even though revenue of $28.24 billion beat the $26.42 billion estimate. The stock fell 14.5% the next day, from $374.01 to $319.69.

Deliveries, production and storage: already known

The 2 October release gave the operating numbers:

  • Deliveries: 486,532, of which 478,237 were Model 3/Y. That is 1.3% above Q2's 480,126 but 2.1% below the 497,099 of Q3 2025, a quarter flattered by buyers rushing ahead of the end of the US federal EV tax credit.
  • Production: 464,391, up 3.8% from 447,450 a year earlier. Tesla delivered about 22,100 more cars than it built, so inventory fell.
  • Energy storage: 13.7 GWh deployed, up from 13.5 GWh in Q2 and 12.5 GWh a year ago, but below the record 14.2 GWh of Q4 2025.

Selling from stock helps cash flow; the margin line will show whether those cars moved at a discount.

Automotive margin ex-credits: the core number

Regulatory credits are almost pure profit, so analysts strip them out to see the real car business. Using the income statements in Tesla's Q2 2026 update, the automotive gross margin excluding credits was:

Ruslan Averin — Tesla automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits by quarter: 15.4% in Q3 2025, 17.9% in Q4 2025, 19.2% in Q1 2026 and 16.3% in Q2 2026, against total GAAP gross margin of 18.0%, 20.1%, 21.1% and 16.8%
Ruslan Averin — Tesla automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits by quarter: 15.4% in Q3 2025, 17.9% in Q4 2025, 19.2% in Q1 2026 and 16.3% in Q2 2026, against total GAAP gross margin of 18.0%, 20.1%, 21.1% and 16.8%
  • Q3 2025: 15.4%
  • Q4 2025: 17.9%
  • Q1 2026: 19.2%
  • Q2 2026: 16.3%

Q2 fell nearly 3 percentage points from Q1 despite a 34% rise in deliveries. In its Q2 letter Tesla pointed to a lower average selling price, including mix, partly offset by lower inbound duties. A Q3 figure at or above 17% would suggest Q2 was the low; a figure near 15% would mean volume is being bought with price.

Credits themselves are shrinking. Regulatory credit revenue was $146 million in Q2 2026, down from $439 million a year earlier and $417 million in Q3 2025. Another quarter near $150 million is likely to be read as the new run-rate rather than a dip.

Energy: growth with a warranty problem

Energy generation and storage revenue was $3.14 billion in Q2, up 13% year on year. But the segment's gross margin, calculated from the same statements, fell to 20.4% from 39.5% in Q1 and 31.4% in Q3 2025. Tesla cited higher "energy warranty-related charges due to vendor cell issue". The Q3 question is whether that was a one-off. Megapack 3 and Megablock production at the new Megafactory Texas is still promised for 2026.

Robotaxi, Cybercab, Optimus: the timelines on record

The Q2 update set the benchmarks investors will measure against:

  • Robotaxi was "live in seven major metros": unsupervised rides in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, with a safety driver in the San Francisco Bay Area. Phoenix and Las Vegas were listed as "preparations underway".
  • Cybercab production started at Gigafactory Texas, with employee rides on the campus from July.
  • The first Optimus lines were being installed at Fremont, in the space of the retired Model S and X lines, "in anticipation of production in 2026".
  • Tesla Semi was "on track for production this year" in Nevada.
  • Active FSD subscriptions reached 1.48 million, up 56% year on year, with more than 55% of new North American deliveries including FSD.

Any slippage on Cybercab volume or Optimus start dates matters more for this valuation than a few cents of EPS. The stock trades at about 192 times forward earnings, per stockanalysis.com, a multiple that only autonomy and robotics can justify.

Capex and the new $30 billion credit lines

Capital spending jumped to $5.79 billion in Q2 from $2.49 billion in Q1, pushing free cash flow to minus $1.09 billion. First-half capex was $8.28 billion, more than double the $3.89 billion of the first half of 2025. The spending includes AI training compute (the Cortex 2 cluster in Texas), battery and lithium plants, and a semiconductor fab in Austin.

On 29 September Tesla signed $30 billion of unsecured bank facilities, according to an 8-K: a $20 billion three-year delayed-draw term loan, an $8 billion five-year revolver and a $2 billion 364-day revolver. Tesla still had $43.5 billion of cash and investments at the end of June. Borrowing while holding that much cash tells you management expects spending to run ahead of operating cash flow for some time. I would look for an explicit 2026 and 2027 capex figure on the call.

Tesla bought $2.0 billion of SpaceX equity in Q1 2026, per its cash flow statement, and booked a $1.0 billion unrealized gain on it in Q2 after SpaceX listed. Electrek, citing SpaceX's S-1, puts the holding at 18,990,195 shares. SpaceX closed at $170.86 on 30 June and $150.86 on 30 September, down 11.7%, so Q3 GAAP results are likely to carry a non-cash loss of a few hundred million dollars on that line. The adjusted figure excludes it.

The bigger issue is a possible merger. On SpaceX's own earnings call on 20 October, Musk said the boards of both companies have formed special committees of independent directors to review a combination, CNBC and Axios reported; Reuters called it the first official confirmation of formal talks. No terms have been agreed, and Musk described himself as a "conflicted party". Tesla's annual meeting is on 3 December.

The 5 lines that decide the reaction

The options market priced a move of about 7.5% by the 23 October expiry, according to Saxo's straddle calculation from 15 October quotes. Saxo puts the median move over the last eight reports at about 4.5%. The lines that decide which way:

  1. Automotive gross margin ex-credits. Above 17% versus at or below 15%.
  2. Regulatory credits. Near $150 million confirms the shrinking pool; a rebound would be a one-off, not a trend.
  3. Energy gross margin. A return toward 25–30% would put the Q2 warranty charge behind it.
  4. Capex guidance and free cash flow. A second negative free cash flow quarter is expected; the size of the 2027 plan is not.
  5. Robotaxi and Cybercab dates. New metros, unsupervised miles and a Cybercab volume target.

In analyst Ruslan Averin's view, the scenario logic is asymmetric this time. A margin beat with firm robotaxi dates could push the stock toward the top of the options range near $390. A margin miss would hurt less than in July if the merger story keeps buyers interested, but a vague capex answer on top of a miss is the combination that produced the 14.5% fall last quarter. I would weight the margin line and the capex number above the headline EPS.
